History

The city of Tete is situated in an uncommonly rich mining area.

It has been visited since remote times by foreigners in search of gold.
Officially the town came into being in the 18th century more precisely in 1761 and at present occupies an area 314 km2 divided into 8 suburbs and it has an estimated population of 125.700 inhabitants.

The town has become an important road transport centre with a modern bridge across the Zambezi.

The village of Moatize owes its existence to the railway line and the coalmining industry started in 1923. It has a population of 18.820 inhabitants living in 6 suburbs.
