By the door of the capital it is located another important industrial city, Matola.
Its development dates back to the 50’s of last century with the construction by the Portuguese settlers of residential suburbs. The next decade saw the establishment of important national industrial conglomerates. The residential suburbs are well planned and have many fine residences.
The studio of sculptor Alberto Chissano, now a museum, is situated at SIAL suburb where his work is on display and where very often workshops, exhibitions and cultural shows are held.
The village of Manhiça is situated some 80 km north of the city of Maputo on the EN1 highway. Its origins date back to the occupation of the State of Gaza at the end of the 19th century where later on a military garrison was established.
It has a population of near 18.000 inhabitants and an area of 250 km2 organised in 3 suburbs and 9 settlements.
