Xai-Xai is the administrative capital of the Gaza province.
The name appears to derive from the local chieftain Languene, best known as Tchai-Tchai, that governed the Denguene region, today known as Fenicelele, situated downtown near the Limpopo river. It is situated some 220 km from Maputo city and is inserted in the Limpopo/Incomati basin.
Nowadays, the city is the centre that organises and backs up the economic activities of the agro-industrial complex at Limpopo. In the past its existence and development were due to its standing as a commercial harbour and being the country’s gateway between the south and the north. This tendency was accentuated with the construction of the EN1 Highway, and the construction of the bridge over the Limpopo river in 1964.
Its tourist vocation begins only in the 50’s of the past century with the construction of a barrier to protect the beach from the floods.
The city maintains all its characteristics and atmosphere of a small colonial town with some buildings of that period that merit a visit; a more prolonged visit to the old premises of the Gaza Railways can reveal some pleasant surprises such as an important collection of railway engines, equipment and buildings dating to the first two decades of the 20th century.
You can also visit the small town of Chibuto, the first headquarters of the Military District of Gaza and Chokwé which is the centre of a vast agricultural zone in the country.
