Biography of the Minister of Tourism

Fernando Sumbana Junior is Minister of Tourism in Mozambique since January 2000.He has been involved in this sector for several years and, until his appointment to the post had been simultaneously president for the National Fund for Tourism and director of the Centre for the Promotion of Investments, having previously served as National Director of Tourism.

Born at Manhiça on the 22 of March 1954, Fernando Sumbana Junior is the son of Fernando Sumbana, a farmer, already deceased, and Fátima Madalena, a housewife. He concluded his pre-university studies in the city of Maputo. He completed his primary school education at João de Deus School in 1964, and basic secondary studies at Joaquim Araujo High School in 1968.He continued his professional training at Instituto Comercial until 1976.He concluded his pre-university studies in Maputo.

In the same year he worked as a high school teacher and became manager of the LM1 and LM2 Supermarkets until the following year. From 1977 until his graduation in Economics at the Eduardo Mondlane University in 1981, he worked on the administrative committee of EDIME. He then obtained certification and a Masters Degree inn the USA in 1988 and 1989.He was Managing Director of Intermetal E.E. from 1978 to 1981. That same year he joined the Ministry of Commerce, where, until 1984, he was the Director of Human Resources, and from 1984 to 1986 Director of International Relations.

In 1986 he became Director of the Centre for the Promotion of Investment until 1992.From the following year until 1995, he was Managing Director of the Commercial Institute of Maputo. He then worked at the Ministry of Commerce and Tourism as National Director of Tourism until 1996 and from 1997 to2000 he was President of the National Fund for Tourism.

From 1996 to 2000 he was again Director of the Centre for Promotion of Investment. Throughout his professional career he negotiated trade and investment agreements with several national and international partners and has read papers at many seminars and conferences. He worked in the re-structuring of the Centre for Promotion of Investment.

He was awarded the Honour Diploma by the Ministry of Commerce and an Honourable Mention by the Eduardo Mondlane University. In the USA he was awarded the “Summa cum Laude” Degree. He is a member of the Frelimo Party and his hobbies are judo, jogging and innovative business. He is married, has 2 sons, and is a member of the Presbyterian Church.
