The country has an area of 80.000 km2 with 2.500 km of coast line. Therefore one of the greatest tourism development potentials is the diversity of its beaches, islands and lagoons throughout the country.

There are also many opportunities for the eco-tourism development such as conservation areas in the 6 natural parks and 5 national reserves.

As a result of the mixing of different cultures throughout its history there is also a rich cultural and culinary heritage of Indian, European and African origin to be explored.

Another area of great potential lies in the creation of reserves along the coast not only to diving activities but also to archaeological exploration of many of the historical shipwrecks.

The development of support infrastructure to the ecological potential has been increasing significantly particularly as concerns luxury and first-class hotels where the accommodation capacity has increased 15,3% and18,3% respectively between 2000 and 2002.
