This conservation area was created by Decree nº. 1982 of 8th of June 1960 in order to protect the then greatest concentration of buffalo in the world.
It is surrounded by the official hunting reserves nº. 10, 11, 12 and 14 and therefore this Reserve is part of the so called “Marromeu Complex” a site listed by RAMSAR.
It is situated in the Marromeu district of Sofala province and occupies an area of 1500 km2.
It is surrounded by a considerable number of recreational hunting reserves managed privately under contract with the government.

By road from the city of Beira.
Protected species:
According to the last census it is estimated that there are at present some 3.000 buffalo and 160 waterbuck and there are signs of a reduction of in the number of other species due in part to the impact of poaching activities but also as an effect of the alteration of the flood cycle in the Zambeze delta caused by the Cahora Bassa dam and the resulting environmental changes.
