Pomene Reserve

The Pomene reserve is the smallest conservation area in the country. Proclaimed by Decree 2496 of 4th of July 1964, it is situated in the district of Massinga in Inhambane province and covers an area of 200 km2.

Protected species
The reserve was created to protect wildebeest and other species combined with the introduction of small and medium sized such as a wide variety of antelopes.

Attractions

Vegetation
Dune system, savannah, mangrove and wetland vegetation offering enormous ecotourism potential.

Fauna

  • Warthog (although there are doubts as to its existence);
  • Baboons and monkeys;
  • Wild dog

Points of Tourist Interest:

  • Pomene lighthouse built at the highest point (110m) of the reserve;
  • Old hotel – on the rock formation at Barra Falsa;
  • Viewing lodge offering a fantastic view over the estuary;
  • Pomene lodge on the beach at the north side of the reserve where the river meets the ocean.
