Quirimbas National Park

The Quirimbas National Park was created by Decree nº. 14/2002 of 6th of June, is the first public area established by the initiative of a provincial authority under the auspices of the WWF in Maputo. It is situated in the Quirimbas archipelago in the province of Cabo Delgado and occupies an area of 7500 km2of marine and terrestrial ecosystems.

How to get There
By air from the provincial capital cities, and from the RSA up to Pemba and thereafter by air to the park.

Protected Species
Several marine and terrestrial species including: turtles, dugong, whale, shark, elephant and other large species.

Vegetation

  • Dry mopane forest;
  • Mangrove at Ibo;
  • Fringe coral reefs;
  • São Lázaro’s Bank with its unique characteristics.

Fauna
The area of the park is crossed by three elephant migratory routes, and there are also lion, leopard, buffalo, wild dog, sable, eland, birds of prey, flamingo, many species of mangrove fish, turtles, dugong, etc.

Turism
Diving and snorkelling in the coral reefs is possible.
