History
Xai-Xai is the administrative capital of the Gaza province.
The name appears to derive from the local chieftain Languene, best known as Tchai-Tchai, that governed the Denguene region, today known as Fenicelele, situated downtown near the Limpopo river. It is situated some 220 km from Maputo city and is inserted in the Limpopo/Incomati basin.
The city maintains all its characteristics and atmosphere of a small colonial town with some buildings of that period that merit a visit; a more prolonged visit to the old premises of the Gaza Railways can reveal some pleasant surprises such as an important collection of railway engines, equipment and buildings dating to the first two decades of the 20th century.
