Bird-Watching

Mozambique is an exciting destination for birders wanting to find the many southern African specials that the region holds, of southern Africa's 900 or so bird species, around 740 have been recorded in Mozambique.

The wealth of birdlife in Mozambique is stunning and more than 900 species have been recorded. Benguerra Island alone is home to 115 different types. Inhaca Island, with its flocks of flamingos, is also excellent for birding as is Lake Chicamba, with its waders and water-birds.

It is a country to spot some of southern Africa's rarest birds, and because much of the country is still uncharted territory, you may even have the chance to record some first-sightings. Among the best bird-watching areas are the Archipelago de Bazaruto, Parque Nacional de Gorongosa and nearby Monte Gorongosa, the Montes Chimanimani, the area around Monte Namúli, the area around Lake Niassa, Reserva Especial de Maputo and the area around Catapu in central Mozambique.
