Covane Fishing & Safari Lodge

Location:

Covane Fishing & Safari Lodge is 14 km outside the village of Massingir, which is situated near the wall of the Massingir Dam, on the southern border of Parque Nacional do Limpopo.

Activities:

Boat-based game, bird-viewing or sunset safaris on the Massingir Dam or up the Rio Elefantes Gorge:  Travel up the Elefantes Gorge which marks the southern border of Parque Nacionale do Limpopo. From the boat you see both water and land-based animals, with crocodile & hippo sightings common. This is a trip for bird-watchers because the Elefantes River Gorge is home to an extraordinary array of birds, including Fish Eagle and Pels Fishing owls. Sunscreen and hats are necessary all year round. Also take a “windbreaker” jacket with you.  All trips are for a minimum of 2 people.

Full Gorge Trip: 4 hours @ R300/1500Mt per person

Safari Trip: 2 hours @ R150/750Mt per person

Sunset cruise: 1.5 hours @ R120/600Mt per person

Boat-based fishing trips on Massingir Dam:   Using your own fishing gear, cast for Tiger fish (catch and release)  Bream / Mozambican Tilapia, Silver Karp or Barbel.

Price: R100/500Mt per hour, per person (minimum 2 people)

Canhane Village tour:  Experience the Shangaan culture with an one hour guided tour of the local village: Price : R90/450Mt per person.  As an optional extra during the tour, meet the traditional healer in Canhane: R4/20Mt per person

Massingir town & market tour:  Experience living in rural Mozambique with an two hour guided tour of the local town of Massingir. See and hear the Portuguese influences while strolling through the markets, buying fresh bread rolls and end your tour enjoying a local beer in the pub.  Price: R150/750Mt per person.

Accommodation

Traditional Rustic Shangaan units are built from wood and thatch, with shade cloth windows. Units have two single beds and option for an additional mattress on the floor. There is a rustic en-suit bathroom with shower, hot & cold water, basin & flush toilet. Linen & towels are provided as well as mosquito nets.

Camping or Overlander sites. Campers have access to communal ablutions with hot water available and facilities to make fires for outdoor cooking / braais. There are no power points available on the stands.

Houseboats on the Massingir Dam are available for overnight accommodation, and to tour the Dam. Built by Lightleys of Knysna, these boats are fully furnished, and ideal for a self-catering holiday. Further details can be found here.

Communal facilities

Meals:  Meals are available by prior arrangement – please confirm requirements at the time of booking your accommodation.  Local cuisine is offered:

Dinner:  R80 per person – For example: Chicken or fish dish.

Lunch: R60 per person – For example: Chicken or fish prego.

Breakfast: R40 per person – For example: Coffee/Tea, eggs, bread, jams.

Beverages:  Bottled water available for sale, with a limited range of local soft drinks, spirits & mixers, local beer and wine. Refrigeration facilities are limited so ice is not always available.

Water.  Guests are encouraged to use water sparingly. Limited facilities are available for hand-washing of clothing.

Power:  Power supplied by a 220V generator, which operates from18h00 to 22h00 daily.
