Maputo Special Reserve

This reserve was proclaimed by Decree nº. 1994 of the 23rd July 1960. It is located in the Matatuine district, Maputo province and covers an area of 700 km2.

How to get there:
From Maputo via ferryboat across the bay to Catembe or by road via the district of Boane.

Protected Species:
This reserve was created primarily for the protection of elephants and white rhino was also introduced in 1977.

Vegetation

  • Coastal dunes with open forestation;
  • Mangrove vegetation;
  • Sand dune vegetation;
  • Wet zones in the Futi corridor and the and the flood plains of the Maputo river;
  • Mangrove ecosystems;
  • Rich dwarf endemic savannah environment;
  • Rare endemic plant species.

Fauna

  • Elephant
  • Chengane buck (nesotragus moschatus);
  • Several species of artiodactylous antelopes;
  • Armadillo;
  • Red squirrel;
  • Several species registered in the CITES appendix;
  • Several species of reptiles including the Nile crocodile;
  • Several species of fish;

Tourist Attractions:

  • Chemucane Point;
  • Menbene Point;
  • Milibangalala Point;
  • Dobela Point;
  • Maputo river basin.
